One of My Favorite Summer Meals

Recipe
Sloppy Joes

At my high school graduation open house many years ago in June, my mom served sloppy joes: I think this may be why sloppy joes will forever be a "summer food" to me, even though they may not be to most people. I'm here to tell you though, that even if you wouldn't typically associate sloppy joes with warm weather, they're a great dinner to break out a busy summer night. They're made on the stovetop, so you don't have to turn on the oven in the summer heat, they're fast and pretty easy to make, they're a perfect alternative for when you're tired of grilled hamburgers (this usually happens for me about 3/4 of the way through the summer), and a big pile of fresh summer fruit is the perfect sloppy joe accompaniment. There you go: four reasons to put sloppy joes on your menu this week. I'm sure many people already have a favorite sloppy joe recipe - I like to use a little red wine vinegar and barbecue sauce in mine. What foods do you associate with summer?

Watermelon is my favorite summer food. And corn on the cob. And fried State Fair goodies. I guess I have a few!

Sloppy Joes used to be what my Grandma would have on the stove every time we came to visit. To this day, we call it "Nan's barbecue." Why we called it barbecue, I'm not quite sure, but it stuck. And guess what MY mom had on the stove when we brought HER grand-daughter to Maine last week? Yep . . . sloppy Joes.

Lia, don't you love family food traditions? I'm glad your mom is carrying on the torch. :)
